The Pressure Area Care Training Course is designed for healthcare professionals, carers, and support staff involved in the prevention and management of pressure ulcers (also known as bedsores or pressure sores). This course provides comprehensive instruction on the principles of pressure area care, including risk assessment, prevention strategies, and management techniques for existing pressure ulcers. Participants will gain practical skills in implementing effective care plans, utilising pressure-relieving equipment, and addressing patient needs to prevent and manage pressure ulcers. The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice to ensure participants are confident and competent in providing high-quality pressure area care.

  • Introduction to Pressure Area Care: Overview of pressure ulcers, including their definitions, stages, and the impact on patient health and quality of life.
  • Anatomy and Risk Factors: Understanding the anatomy of pressure areas and the risk factors that contribute to pressure ulcer development, such as immobility, poor nutrition, and moisture.
  • Risk Assessment Tools: Instruction on using risk assessment tools, such as the Braden Scale or Waterlow Score, to identify patients at risk of developing pressure ulcers and inform care planning.
  • Prevention Strategies: Best practices for preventing pressure ulcers, including repositioning techniques, use of pressure-relieving devices (e.g., specialised mattresses and cushions), and skin care protocols.
  • Pressure Ulcer Management: Techniques for managing existing pressure ulcers, including wound assessment, cleaning, dressing choices, and pain management.
  • Care Planning and Documentation: Developing and implementing individualised care plans for pressure area management, including setting goals, documenting care, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Patient Education and Support: Providing education and support to patients and their families on pressure ulcer prevention and management, including lifestyle adjustments and self-care practices.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations: Overview of the legal and ethical responsibilities related to pressure area care, including maintaining accurate records, obtaining informed consent, and adhering to clinical guidelines.
