The IV Fluids and Drug Calculations Training Course is tailored for healthcare professionals who are responsible for prescribing, preparing, and administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medications. This course provides an in-depth understanding of the principles of fluid therapy, the types of IV fluids, and the importance of accurate drug calculations to ensure patient safety. Participants will learn to perform calculations for IV fluid rates, drug dosages, and infusion times, applying these skills in both routine and emergency clinical settings. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical exercises, ensuring participants can confidently and competently manage IV therapies.

Course Content:

  • Introduction to IV Therapy: Overview of IV therapy, including the indications for its use, types of IV fluids (crystalloids, colloids, blood products), and their applications in patient care.
  • Principles of Fluid Balance: Understanding the principles of fluid balance in the body, including the assessment of hydration status, and the importance of maintaining electrolyte balance.
  • Drug Calculation Fundamentals: Review of basic arithmetic and unit conversions, essential for accurate drug calculations, including understanding concentration, dosage, and rate of administration.
  • IV Fluid Rate Calculations: Step-by-step instruction on calculating IV fluid rates based on patient needs, including drops per minute (gtt/min) and millilitres per hour (mL/hr).
  • Medication Dosage Calculations: Techniques for calculating the correct dosage of IV medications, including weight-based dosages, dilution, and infusion rates.
  • Complex Calculations: Handling more complex calculations involving drug concentrations, bolus injections, and continuous infusions, with a focus on precision and patient safety.
  • Practical Application: Hands-on practice with IV fluid and drug calculations, using real-life clinical scenarios to reinforce learning and ensure readiness for practical application.
  • Safety Considerations: Emphasising the importance of double-checking calculations, understanding potential errors, and implementing safety measures to prevent medication errors.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations: Overview of the legal and ethical responsibilities related to IV therapy and drug calculations, including documentation, patient consent, and adherence to clinical guidelines.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the IV Fluids and Drug Calculations Training Course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand IV Therapy and Fluid Balance: Demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of IV therapy, including the types of IV fluids and their appropriate use, as well as the importance of maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance.

  • Perform Accurate Drug Calculations: Accurately perform drug calculations, including determining the correct dosage, infusion rates, and fluid volumes for IV medications, ensuring patient safety.

  • Calculate IV Fluid Rates: Confidently calculate IV fluid rates using standard formulas, adapting these calculations to meet the specific needs of individual patients.

  • Manage Complex Calculations: Handle complex drug and fluid calculations, including weight-based dosages, continuous infusions, and bolus doses, applying precision and attention to detail.

  • Apply Calculations in Clinical Practice: Use the skills gained in practical exercises to apply accurate IV fluid and drug calculations in real-life clinical settings, contributing to effective patient care.

  • Implement Safety Measures: Recognise the importance of double-checking calculations, understanding potential risks, and implementing safety protocols to prevent errors in IV therapy.

  • Adhere to Legal and Ethical Standards: Understand and apply the legal and ethical principles related to IV fluid and drug administration, including obtaining informed consent and maintaining accurate records.

  • Demonstrate Practical Competence: Confidently apply the knowledge and skills learned through practical sessions, ensuring competence in performing IV fluid and drug calculations in clinical practice.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be equipped with the essential skills required to perform accurate IV fluid and drug calculations, ensuring safe and effective patient care. They will receive certification, reflecting their competence in this critical area of clinical practice.
