The Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Training Course is designed for healthcare professionals who may need to respond to adult cardiac arrests and other life-threatening emergencies in a clinical setting. This course provides in-depth instruction on the essential skills required for managing cardiac arrests, including the use of airway management techniques, defibrillation, and drug administration. Participants will also learn how to recognise and respond to deteriorating patients, ensuring prompt and effective intervention. The course is a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling participants to act confidently and competently in critical situations.

Course Content:

  • Recognition of the Deteriorating Patient: Understanding the signs of clinical deterioration and the importance of early intervention to prevent cardiac arrest.
  • Adult Basic Life Support (BLS) Review: A brief review of adult BLS, including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
  • Airway Management: Instruction on airway management techniques, including the use of oropharyngeal airways, bag-valve-mask ventilation, and oxygen therapy.
  • Defibrillation: Safe and effective use of manual defibrillators and AEDs, including recognising shockable and non-shockable rhythms and delivering appropriate shocks.
  • Cardiac Arrest Algorithms: Understanding and applying the Resuscitation Council UK algorithms for managing cardiac arrest, including the steps for shockable and non-shockable rhythms.
  • Post-Resuscitation Care: Overview of the immediate care required following the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), including stabilisation and transfer to definitive care.
  • Drug Administration During Cardiac Arrest: Instruction on the administration of emergency drugs, such as adrenaline and amiodarone, during cardiac arrest, including dosages and timing.
  • Team Dynamics and Communication: Effective communication and leadership skills in a resuscitation scenario, focusing on the importance of teamwork and clear roles within the resuscitation team.
  • Practical Scenarios: Hands-on practice in managing simulated cardiac arrest scenarios, reinforcing the application of ILS skills in real-life situations.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Training Course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise Signs of Clinical Deterioration: Identify and respond to early signs of patient deterioration, implementing appropriate measures to prevent cardiac arrest.

  • Perform Airway Management Techniques: Demonstrate competence in airway management, including the use of oropharyngeal airways, bag-valve-mask ventilation, and supplementary oxygen.

  • Administer Effective Defibrillation: Safely and effectively use manual defibrillators and AEDs, correctly identifying shockable and non-shockable rhythms and delivering appropriate defibrillation.

  • Apply Cardiac Arrest Algorithms: Follow the Resuscitation Council UK guidelines for managing cardiac arrest, including both shockable and non-shockable rhythms, ensuring systematic and effective resuscitation.

  • Administer Emergency Drugs: Understand the role of emergency drugs in cardiac arrest management and administer them correctly, following recommended dosages and timings.

  • Provide Post-Resuscitation Care: Implement the necessary steps for post-resuscitation care, ensuring the patient is stabilised and prepared for transfer to advanced care settings.

  • Lead and Communicate in Resuscitation Scenarios: Demonstrate effective leadership and communication skills within a resuscitation team, ensuring clear roles and efficient teamwork during an emergency.

  • Apply Skills in Practical Scenarios: Confidently apply the skills and knowledge gained in the course through hands-on practice in simulated cardiac arrest scenarios, demonstrating readiness for real-life clinical situations.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be equipped with the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage cardiac arrests and life-threatening emergencies effectively. They will receive certification, reflecting their competence in Intermediate Life Support and their readiness to contribute to the resuscitation team in clinical settings.
