The First Aid at Work Training Course is designed to provide participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to a range of medical emergencies in the workplace. This comprehensive course covers the principles of first aid, practical techniques for managing injuries and illnesses, and how to provide immediate care until professional medical help arrives. The training is tailored to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, making it ideal for those who need to fulfil the role of a first aider in various workplace settings.

 

Course Content:

 

  • Introduction to First Aid: Overview of first aid principles, the role and responsibilities of a first aider, and the importance of first aid in the workplace.
  • Health and Safety: Understanding the legal requirements and responsibilities related to first aid in the workplace, including risk assessments and reporting procedures.
  • Emergency Situations: Assessing and managing emergency situations, including how to conduct a thorough scene assessment and prioritise care.
  • CPR and AED Use: Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and infants, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively.
  • Choking: Techniques for dealing with choking in adults, children, and infants, including the appropriate use of abdominal thrusts and back blows.
  • Wounds and Bleeding: Managing different types of wounds, including cuts, grazes, and puncture wounds, and controlling bleeding using bandages, dressings, and pressure.
  • Burns and Scalds: Treating burns and scalds, including recognising the severity of burns, cooling techniques, and appropriate use of dressings.
  • Fractures and Dislocations: Identifying and managing fractures and dislocations, including immobilisation techniques and treatment for suspected spinal injuries.
  • Shock: Recognising the signs and symptoms of shock, including how to manage and treat it effectively to prevent deterioration.
  • Medical Emergencies: Handling a range of medical emergencies such as seizures, asthma attacks, diabetic emergencies, and allergic reactions.
  • First Aid Kit: Understanding the contents and proper use of a first aid kit, and how to replenish and maintain it.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the First Aid at Work Training Course, participants will be able to:

 

  • Understand First Aid Principles: Demonstrate a clear understanding of first aid principles, including the role and responsibilities of a first aider in the workplace.

  • Conduct Emergency Assessments: Perform thorough scene assessments in emergency situations, ensuring personal safety and prioritising care effectively.

  • Perform CPR and Use an AED: Execute cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and infants, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) confidently and correctly.

  • Manage Choking Incidents: Apply appropriate techniques to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants, ensuring effective airway clearance.

  • Treat Wounds and Control Bleeding: Manage different types of wounds and control bleeding using proper techniques, including the use of bandages and dressings.

  • Treat Burns and Scalds: Provide appropriate first aid for burns and scalds, including recognising the severity and applying cooling and dressing techniques.

  • Handle Fractures and Dislocations: Identify and manage fractures and dislocations, including immobilisation techniques and the treatment of suspected spinal injuries.

  • Recognise and Manage Shock: Identify the signs and symptoms of shock and provide appropriate treatment to prevent deterioration.

  • Respond to Medical Emergencies: Manage a range of medical emergencies, including seizures, asthma attacks, diabetic emergencies, and allergic reactions, using effective first aid techniques.

  • Utilise a First Aid Kit: Understand the contents and correct use of a first aid kit, including how to maintain and replenish it.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate of achievement, demonstrating their competence in first aid and their ability to provide immediate care in emergency situations. This certification is recognised and valid for three years, ensuring that first aid skills are kept up-to-date and effective.
