The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Training Course is designed for employees in any workplace who may be required to respond to a first aid emergency. This one-day course provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of first aid situations that may arise in the workplace. The course covers the roles and responsibilities of a first aider, how to assess an incident, and the appropriate responses to common injuries and medical conditions. Participants will learn through a combination of theory, practical demonstrations, and hands-on practice, ensuring they are confident in delivering first aid when needed.

 

Course Content:

 

  • Introduction to First Aid: Overview of first aid principles, the importance of first aid in the workplace, and the legal requirements for first aid provision.
  • Roles and Responsibilities of a First Aider: Understanding the role of a first aider, including assessing situations quickly, preventing further harm, and providing the necessary treatment.
  • Assessing an Incident: How to conduct a primary survey of a casualty, including checking for responsiveness, airway, breathing, and circulation (the ABCs).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Practical instruction on performing CPR on adults, including the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
  • Managing an Unconscious Casualty: Steps to take when dealing with an unconscious but breathing casualty, including placing them in the recovery position.
  • Dealing with Choking: Recognising the signs of choking and applying the appropriate treatment, including back blows and abdominal thrusts.
  • Control of Bleeding: Techniques for managing severe bleeding, including the application of dressings and bandages.
  • Treating Shock: Understanding the signs of shock and how to manage a casualty who is experiencing shock.
  • Minor Injuries: Guidance on treating minor injuries, such as small cuts, grazes, bruises, and minor burns.
  • First Aid Kits and Equipment: An overview of the contents of a first aid kit and how to use the items effectively in an emergency.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting: The importance of accurate record-keeping and reporting in first aid situations, including completing accident reports.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Training Course, participants will be able to:

 

  • Understand the Role of a First Aider: Demonstrate a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a first aider in the workplace, including legal obligations.

  • Conduct a Primary Survey: Confidently assess an incident and conduct a primary survey to check for responsiveness, airway, breathing, and circulation.

  • Perform CPR: Perform effective CPR on adults and demonstrate the correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

  • Manage Unconscious Casualties: Safely manage an unconscious but breathing casualty, including placing them in the recovery position.

  • Treat Choking: Recognise the signs of choking and apply the appropriate first aid techniques to relieve airway obstruction.

  • Control Bleeding: Effectively manage severe bleeding using appropriate first aid techniques, including the application of dressings and bandages.

  • Treat Shock: Identify the signs of shock and provide the necessary first aid to manage the condition.

  • Address Minor Injuries: Provide appropriate treatment for minor injuries commonly encountered in the workplace.

  • Utilise First Aid Kits: Understand the contents of a first aid kit and use the equipment correctly in an emergency.

  • Maintain Accurate Records: Demonstrate the ability to keep accurate records of first aid incidents and complete necessary reporting forms.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate that is valid for three years, recognising their competence as an Emergency First Aider in the workplace. They will be equipped with the practical skills and confidence to respond effectively to a wide range of first aid emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of their colleagues.
