The ECG Training Course is designed for healthcare professionals who need to acquire or enhance their skills in performing and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs). This course provides a comprehensive understanding of ECG principles, techniques, and clinical applications. Participants will learn how to perform ECGs accurately, interpret the results, and use the findings to support patient assessment and management. The training combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practice to ensure competence in ECG procedures and interpretation.

 

Course Content:

 

  • Introduction to ECG: Overview of the purpose and importance of ECG in diagnosing and monitoring cardiovascular conditions. Understanding the electrical activity of the heart and how it is represented on an ECG.
  • ECG Anatomy and Physiology: Review of the cardiac conduction system, including the roles of the sinoatrial (SA) node, atrioventricular (AV) node, bundle of His, and Purkinje fibres. Understanding how electrical impulses are generated and conducted through the heart.
  • ECG Leads and Placement: Instruction on the different types of ECG leads (e.g., limb leads, precordial leads) and proper electrode placement for obtaining a 12-lead ECG.
  • ECG Waveforms and Intervals: Identification and interpretation of key ECG waveforms (P wave, QRS complex, T wave) and intervals (PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval). Understanding normal and abnormal waveform patterns.
  • ECG Interpretation: Techniques for analysing and interpreting ECG tracings, including recognising normal sinus rhythm and identifying common arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and myocardial infarction.
  • Clinical Applications: Application of ECG findings in clinical scenarios, including using ECGs to diagnose and manage various cardiovascular conditions and understanding the implications of abnormal findings.
  • Troubleshooting and Quality Control: Identifying and addressing common issues with ECG recordings, such as artefacts, electrode placement errors, and ensuring accurate readings.
  • Practical Skills and Scenario Training: Hands-on practice with ECG equipment, including performing ECGs, interpreting results, and applying knowledge through simulated case studies.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the ECG Training Course, participants will be able to:

 

  • Understand ECG Principles: Demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of ECG, including the cardiac conduction system and how electrical activity is recorded.

  • Perform ECG Accurately: Accurately perform ECG procedures, including correct electrode placement and obtaining a high-quality 12-lead ECG.

  • Identify and Interpret Waveforms: Recognise and interpret key ECG waveforms and intervals, understanding normal and abnormal patterns.

  • Analyse ECG Tracings: Apply techniques for analysing ECG tracings and identifying common arrhythmias and cardiovascular conditions, such as atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction.

  • Apply ECG Findings Clinically: Use ECG findings to support patient assessment and management, including understanding the clinical significance of abnormal results.

  • Troubleshoot and Ensure Quality: Identify and address common issues with ECG recordings, ensuring accurate readings and troubleshooting problems with electrode placement or artefacts.

  • Apply Skills in Practical Scenarios: Reinforce and apply knowledge through hands-on practice and simulated case studies, demonstrating competence in performing and interpreting ECGs.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform and interpret ECGs effectively. They will receive certification, reflecting their proficiency in ECG techniques and their ability to utilise ECG findings in patient care and management.
